Wikipedia is an encyclopedia made with a wiki.

There are different Wikipedias written in many languages - there are more than 15,000 articles in at least eight of them. It is open content. Many people write it.

The project started on January 15 2001. The project is part of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Overall, there are over 300,000 articles. Approximately half are in English.

The Simple English Wikipedia was created on September 18 2001 in order to let people who are learning English use Wikipedia. On 18 December 2003, the Simple English Wikipedia began using the MediaWiki software.
