Wozzeck

Wozzeck is the first and most famous opera by Alban Berg. The opera was based an unfinished play by German playwright Georg Büchner, who died in 1837 before he could complete the play.

Berg began work on the opera in 1917 while on leave from his regiment during World War I. He completed the opera in 1922. Erich Kleiber conducted the world premiere of Wozzeck in 1925.

Wozzeck is one of the most famous examples of atonality, which is when a musical composition deliberately avoids establishing a key (music). The atonal style helps dramatize Wozzeck's themes of alienation and madness.
