In most educational systems, an undergraduate is a student pursuing to a Bachelor's degree. Students of higher degrees are known as postgraduates (or often simply graduates).

In the United States, most undergraduate education takes place at four-year colleges or universities. These years are divided into freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior standing. Colleges tend to be smaller schools that specialize in one broad field, such as humanities, engineering, or business. Universities are larger institutions that study a wide range of fields and also do more research than colleges. Successful completion of undergraduate work in any school generally requires the completion of a plethora of courses of varying subject and difficulty, and that focus on a particular subject.

In the United Kingdom, undergraduate refers to the first three or four years of study towards a Bachelor's degree.
