Transgressional fiction is a form of fiction in which the story centers around one or more characters who feel confined by the current norms and expectations of society. These characters, throughout the course of the story, attempt to break out from those boundaries and find that which they are looking for, be it better self-identity, inner peace, or anything else that they are unable to attain within the current boundaries. These works are often controversial, due to the actions of the characters in these stories, which are sometimes anti-social in nature or borderline on being so. Still, they give insite into the state of our society, and help raise issues about potential or existing problems within it.

Minimalism is a common method of writing in transgressional fiction.

The author Chuck Palahniuk often uses the phrase transgressional fiction when describing his form of writing.
