The Four Feathers

The Four Feathers is a 2002 motion picture that tells the story of British officer, Harry Faversham, who resigns from his regiment just before the battle of Omdurman in the Sudan in the late 1880s. He is faced with either redeeming himself of the subsequent charge of cowardice, or else losing any respect in stern Victorian society. This adventure film is the most recent of several movie versions, all based on the classic 1902 novel by A.E.W. Mason.

It was directed by Shekhar Kapur, and stars Heath Ledger, Wes Bentley, and Kate Hudson. Its running time is 127 minutes.

Earlier Film Versions

This film has been re-made many times. Previous versions include:

The Four Feathers (UK) (1939)

Producer Alexander Korda, Director Zoltan Korda Starring Ralph Richardson, John Clements, C Aubrey Smith, June Duprez.

Considered by many to have been the best of the film versions, this was lavishly filmed in colour on many of the real African locations.

Storm Over the Nile (UK) (1955)

Directed by Terence Young, Zoltan Korda Starring Anthony Steele, James Robertson Justice, Ian Carmichael, Ronald Lewis, Michael Hordern

A low-budget remake, using much of the location footage shot for the 1939 version of The Four Feathers.

The Four Feathers (UK) (1977)

Director Don Sharp Starring Robert Powell, Simon Ward, Beau Bridges, Jane Seymour

Completely remade for a new generation, the classic tale retains its imperial stiff upper lip and Boys Own style of adventure heroics.
