Over 536 pages it describes, in great detail, many aspects of the "Duniverse" not found in the novels themselves. This includes biographies of the major characters, the languages of Fremen, Galach, and Spacing Guild (including alphabets, and pronunciation), shortened stories of the plots of novels, explanations of the armies, and major schools (Bene Gesserit, Mentat, Sword Masters of Ginaz etc.), explanations of major industries (including Spice), and future technology, as well as artwork on the major concepts of the novels, and more.
It was written by Dr. McNelly and others at California State University in 1984. Frank Herbert considered it only "entertaining" . Many ideas posited in the Dune Encyclopedia go directly against the prequel trilogies, Prelude to Dune and Legends of Dune (Dune: House Atriedes, Dune: House Harkonnen, Dune: House Corrino, Dune: The Machine Crusade, Dune: The Butlerian Jihad, Dune: Battle of Corrin), written by Kevin J. Anderson, and Brian Herbert (Frank Herbert's son). For those, Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert used original notes written by Frank Herbert.
