The show emulated newsmagazine shows by producing documentaries, but the format of the program diverged by presenting each documentary in front of a "live" audience. The Awful Truth focused on exposing problems in American government, business, and society, while bringing up interesting—if somewhat outlandish—solutions to those problems.
The Awful Truth is also the name of a popular gossip column written by Ted Casablanca and published at E! Online.
