Term limit
A term limit is a clause put in a constitution or bylaw which defines a limit as to the number of terms a person can serve in a particular elected office. An example would be the 22nd Amendment of the United States Constitution which says that no person can be elected President more than twice.Arguments in favor of term limits include:
- It prevents one person from seizing control of the government
- It reduces the tendency of incumbents to become entrenched through the use of their advantages over any challenger
- A highly qualified, well-liked person can be forced out of office even though they might easily win re-election
