Syndrome X
Syndrome X (or: metabolic syndrome X) is a medical condition that affects a large number of people. In some studies, the prevalence in the USA is calculated as being up to 25% of the population.Symptoms are:
- High blood pressure;
- Central obesity and difficulty losing weight;
- High cholesterol (combined hyperlipidemia);
- Insulin resistance and/or type II diabetes.
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome;
- Hemochromatosis;
- Acanthosis nigricans;
- Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis
Syndrome X is not related to the fragile X syndrome, a chromosomal abnormality. There is also a cardiac syndrome X, a subtype of angina pectoris where there is cardiac ischemia on exercise testing but no causative atherosclerosis on a coronary angiogram.
