Susquehanna River
The Susquehanna River is a river in the northeastern United States. There are two branches of the river: the west branch and the north branch. The north branch starts in New York State; the west branch originates in Pennsylvania. The two branches meet at Sunbury, Pennsylvania to form the main branch of the river. The main branch flows through Pennsylvania and Maryland into the Chesapeake Bay, which is in fact an estuary consisting of the drowned lower valley of the Susquehanna. Rising near Cooperstown, New York, the north branch of the river river winds southward through the Appalachian Mountains in Pennsylvania. Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the state capital, is located on the Susquehanna. The river suffered the dumping of more than 40,000 gallons (150 m³) of radioactive fuel during the Three Mile Island meltdown in 1979.
