Super Mario RPG is the last Mario game ever made for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and was the last Squaresoft-produced game for a Nintendo video game console until 2003, with the debut of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for the Nintendo GameCube. This was the first role-playing game of the Mario series. It contains simliarities to Chrono Trigger and the Final Fantasy-series with a story based on the Mario universe. Super Mario RPG contains a musical reference to Final Fantasy, that is when fighting Culex in Monstro Town. The boss battle theme of Final Fantasy IV and the Final Fantasy prelude and victory themes were reused in Super Mario RPG. Also, Link and Samus Aran made cameo appearances in the game.

The music was composed by Koji Kondo, Nobuo Uematsu, and Yoko Shimomura.

In this game an extraterrestrial named Smithy takes over Mario's world. In order to stop him Mario and his friends have to find seven star pieces. Members of Mario's team include:

Subplots include helping Mallow find his parents, finding Princess Peach, and helping King Bowser get his keep back. This is the first game in which Mario and Bowser are on the same side. The two reunited again in .
