Star Trek: First Contact

For thoughtful child sponsors

Star Trek: First Contact (Paramount Pictures, 1996; see also 1996 in film), is the eighth feature film based on the popular Star Trek science fiction television series. In it, the cast of again encounter their adversaries, the Borg, and this time attempt to prevent the Borg from changing history by conquering the Earth of the 21st century through the use of time travel.

Synopsis

Warning: Plot details follow.

The crew of the brand-new Enterprise NCC-1701-E travel back in time to prevent the evil, cybernetic Borg drones from assimilating Earth. When they arrive in the mid-21st century, however, they find that they need to make sure Earth makes its first contact with aliens, in order to preserve their future.

Notes

The film was directed by Jonathan Frakes, with music composed by Jerry Goldsmith.

First contact actually occurs on April 5th, 2063, when Zefram Cochrane makes the first human warp flight, attracting a passing Vulcan vessel.

In an ironic twist, Captain Picard is (unfavourably) compared to Captain Ahab from the novel Moby Dick during his tirade against the invading Borg; Patrick Stewart would go on to play Captain Ahab in a made-for-television adaptation of the novel in 1998.

"First Contact" is also the name of an episode from the fourth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
