St. Paul's College, Hong Kong
St. Paul's College(聖保羅書院), founded in 1851, is the oldest secondary school started in Hong Kong. The founder of the school, the Revd. Vincent John Stanton, is as well the first Colonial Chaplain and the first official representative from the Church of England in the former colony of Hong Kong. The school started as an Anglo-Chinese school with only one tutor and nine students. As of September 2003, however, the school had an enrollment of 1,238 students, bearing little resemblance to its humble beginning.
The mission of the school, as stated in the St. Paul's College Council Ordinance (Cap 1102) (which was enacted by the Legislative Council in 1962) is the provision of "education to Chinese youths in the English language upon Christian principles".
The school motto, adopted by the former Principal the Revd. Arthur Dudley Stewart, is "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge" (Proverbs 1:7).
Over the years, the school has nurtured numerous alumni who contribute in the government and in the academic, professional and business arenas.
The year 2001 marked the 150th Anniversary of the school, and in the same year the school decided to join the Direct Subsidy Scheme, under which the school is given more freedom in the enrollment of students and the design of the curriculum.
