Shooting sports

The shooting sports include hunting as well as those competitive sports involving tests of accuracy and speed when shooting various types of guns, including airguns and bows and arrows.

The shooting sports are categorized by the type of weapon or target used. The web site www.wheretoshoot.org identifies 20 different shooting sports, but does not claim that the list is complete.

Handgun shooting sports include both Olympic-style sports and various practical shooting disciplines including straight target shooting (indoor and outdoor), quick-draw competitions, and metal silhouette shooting.

Rifle shooting sports include a similar list, as well as biathlon, an Olympic sport combining shooting and cross-country skiing.

Shotgun shooting sports include trapshooting, skeetshooting, and sporting clays, all based on quick reaction to targets thrown by hand or machine.

The international Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun and Running Target ISSF shooting events, including the Olympic events, are governed by the International Shooting Sport Federation.
