Shilin
Shilin (Wade-Giles: Shihlin) is a district of Taipei, the largest city in Taiwan. It is home to one of the most famous Taiwan Night Markets as well as a large portion of the Taipei population.
Well known subdistricts of Shihlin include Tienmu (pinyin: Tianmu) and Waishuanghsi. A substantial portion of the Yangmingshan National Park is within the Shihlin District.
A large foreign population lives in Tienmu and Yangmingshan. The Taipei American School and the Taipei Japanese School are located in Tienmu. The Taipei European School is located on Yangmingshan.
Shihlin tourist attractions include the Shihlin Night Market, the National Palace Museum, and Chiang Kai-shek's official residence and summer residence. Chiang Kai-shek's official residence has been converted into a minature botanical garden.
Shihlin was once famous for its cutting knives and for scholars that passed the Chinese imperial civil service exams. In fact the name Shihlin is literally translated as "Scholarly Woods."
The district has three universities: Ming Chuan University, Soochow University, and the Chinese Culture University.
