The Shakya (or Sakya) were a clan of Hindu kshatriyas.

Their origin can be traced to migrations from Central-Asia, especially by the Yuezhi, a people of Indo-European descent originally settled in the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang, who spoke an Indo-European language called Tocharian.

Perhaps the most famous Shakya was Siddartha Gautama, the Buddha. The Shakyas lived near the foothills of the Himalayas.
