A shadowman (also known as a shadow man or shadow person) is a humanoid black shape, most likely of hallucinatory, illusionary, or delusional origin, seen for a short period of time. A potential topic for both optics and cryptozoology, shadowmen are described as all-black figures (although sometimes they are also described as having red eyes). Typically people will perceive one at the edge of their field of vision, but once they start looking more intently and centeredly at it, the shadowman will vanish.

Although the shapes are distorted and seen from different angles, their shape is clearly that of a biped very similar to a human. Like a shadow, they appear to have only two dimensions. Some people theorize that shadowmen may be from another dimension and, when passing through our world, have only two of their many dimensions visible to us; others theorize that shadowmen do not in fact exist.
