Sandown is a seaside resort town on the east coast of the Isle of Wight, England, neighbouring Shanklin to the south.

Natural interests

It is most notable for its chalk cliffs where a number of unusual ant species live, including the semi-myrmecophillous Solenopsis fugax (Latr.), which was recorded there several times by Horace Donisthorpe.

Ponera coartata has also been taken from this location.

Sandown has been a seaside resort town since the Victorian age thank to his very sunny weather compared to the more foggy London. Its success showed up with the building of a rail way between Sandown and Ryde on the north coast of the Isle of Wight.
Nowadays, tourists have access to multiples activities such as 18-hole golf, airport and a museum about dinosaurs.
