The purposes of the mission were to deploy and retrieve the CRISTA-SPAS satellite, designed to study Earth's middle atmosphere, test a robot arm designed for the International Space Station, operate the Microgravity vibration isolation mount experiment, and observe ultraviolet radiation from the Comet Hale-Bopp.
The mission lasted a day longer than originally planned due to a threat of ground fog at Kennedy Space Center.
