A rebellion is an armed resistance to an established government. Those who participate in rebellions are rebels.

Other words for a rebellion include: revolt, uprising, insurrection, and insurgency. Some of these words, especially rebellion and revolt, often have a pejorative connotation while uprising or insurrection are prefered by rebels (insurgents, freedom fighters) themselves. Compare: mutiny, revolution.

Throughout history, rebellions and revolutions have been staged by political minorities – most commonly moral majorities – in order to achieve some goal.

For example, the Boxer rebellion was an uprising against Western commercial and political influence in China during the final years of the 19th century.

The Open Source "revolution", as it is called, has often been called a rebellion. Whilst it does not fit into the dictionary term of the word, due to the lack of firearms, swords, or anything else lethal to the established government, which in this case is also nonexistant, it does similarize most rebellions in so much as it is a moral majority of programmers standing up against closed source software, inferior code and intellectual-capitalism
