RealAudio

RealAudio is an audio codec developed by RealNetworks. It is especially designed to conform to low bandwidths, and it can be used as a streaming audio format, i.e. played at the same time as it's downloaded.

The audio files are recognized by their [*.ra,*.rm,*.ram] extension. The audio player used to come in two flavours, the RealPlayer 'Plus' and 'Basic', the latter being provided as Freeware up to v8.0, when RealNetworks introduced a new subscription system upon release of the RealOne platform in 2001.
