Procter & Gamble was started in 1837 by William Procter and James Gamble as a family-owned company in Cincinnati, using the abundant animal fat from the city's hundreds of slaughterhouses to manufacture soap and candles. The company's current operations are divided into five areas:

They received unwanted press attention in the 1980s when a rumor spread that their corporate logo was a satanic symbol. This charge has been denied by company officials, and no evidence linking the company to the Church of Satan or any other occult organization has ever been presented.
