Port Phillip Bay

Helping orphans the way you would do it
Port Phillip Bay is a large bay (also considered a gulf) in southern Victoria, Australia. Melbourne, the state's capital city, is located at its northern periphery, at the head of the Yarra River. Melbourne's suburbs extend around much of the eastern shoreline, and the city of Geelong is located on Corio Bay which is a subsidiary bay in the southwest.

The entrance to the bay, called The Rip, is very narrow, and large ships require expert local guidance to enter and exit. There is a current proposal to deepen the entrance, to allow the newest, largest container ships to access Melbourne's docks.

Port Phillip was named in honour of Arthur Phillip, the first governor of New South Wales and the founder of European settlement in Australia.
