Polly Matzinger
An iconoclastic scientist who proposed a novel explanation of the immune system's ability to identify self from non-self. She credited her discovery largely to her sheepdog. Many leading scientific journals however did not consider it appropriate to publish a paper coauthored with a dog despite the merits of the publication.To many she stands as a symbol of the scientific spirit and its openness.
