It starred Freddie Bartholomew as young David Copperfield, Frank Lawton as the older David Copperfield, Edna May Oliver as Aunt Betsey, Basil Rathbone as Mr. Murdstone, Una O'Connor as Mrs. Gummidge, Lionel Barrymore as Dan Peggotty, Elsa Lanchester as Clickett and W.C. Fields as Micawber.

The film was adapted by Hugh Walpole, Howard Estabrook and Lenore J. Coffee from the Dickens novel, and directed by George Cukor.
