Operation Ivy
Operation Ivy was the first nuclear test of a fusion bomb (hydrogen bomb), undertaken by the United States on November 1, 1952The device, codenamed Mike, was 20 ft (6 m) high, 6 ft 8 in (2 m) wide, and weighed 140,000 lb (63.5 t). Too large to be deployed as a weapon, it was built solely to demonstrate the power of a fusion explosion. It was detonated on Elugelab Island in the Enewetak Atoll of the Marshall Islands. It yielded 10.4 megatons of explosive power, over 450 times the power of the bomb that fell on Nagasaki. The detonation obliterated Elugelab, leaving an underwater crater 6,240 ft (1.9 km) wide and 164 ft (50 m) deep where an island had once been.
Operation Ivy was a ska punk band who originated from the East Bay of San Francisco. Two of their members, Tim Armstrong ("Lint") and Matt Freeman, went on to form the band Rancid.
The band existed between May of 1987 and May of 1989. They released an EP (Hectic, January 1988) and a 12 inch record titled Energy on Lookout! Records in March 1989 shortly before they disbanded.
