Nordkapp
The municipality Nordkapp in the county of Finnmark, Norway, has 3,513 inhabitants as of January 1, 2002. Most inhabitants live in the fishing village of HonningsvÃÂÃÂ¥g, but also KamÃÂøyvÃÂær, SkarsvÃÂÃÂ¥g and GjesvÃÂær are inhabited.The municipality's most famous point, after which it is named, is Nordkapp (North Cape), a 307 m. high cliff that marks the northernmost point of Europe. During 2-3 Summer months some 200 000 tourists visit annually. However, the neighbouring point Knivskjellodden is actually some 1500 meters further north.
The North Cape became a famous point as the English explorer Richard Chancellor rounded it in 1553 when attempting to find a sea route through the North East passage.
