Nicholas M. Butler

Nicholas Murray Butler (April 2, 1862 - December 7, 1947) was the president of the Columbia University for about 43 years between 1902 and 1945. He became involved in Republican politics and became the vice presidential candidate under President William H. Taft in 1912 when the nominated vice presidential candidate James S. Sherman died in office a few days before the election. Taft and Butler lost to Woodrow Wilson and Thomas Marshall, the Democratic ticket. Butler was also a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 1920 but lost to Ohio Senator Warren G. Harding.
