Nicholas M. Butler
Nicholas Murray Butler (
April 2,
1862 -
December 7,
1947) was the president of the
Columbia University for about 43 years between
1902 and
1945. He became involved in
Republican politics and became the
vice presidential candidate under
President William H. Taft in
1912 when the nominated
vice presidential candidate
James S. Sherman died in office a few days before the
election. Taft and Butler lost to
Woodrow Wilson and
Thomas Marshall, the
Democratic ticket. Butler was also a candidate for the
Republican presidential nomination in
1920 but lost to
Ohio Senator Warren G. Harding.
