New Jersey Transit
New Jersey Transit is the public transportation system of the state of New Jersey, USA. It operates bus, light rail and rail services. It also sends commuter rails to Pennsylvania Station in New York City's Midtown Manhattan.NJ Transit was founded in 1979 to take several over private bus companies. In 1983, it took over all commuter rail service in the state from CONRAIL. It now operates every bus, light rail and rail line in the state except the PATH trains, which are owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the PATCO Hi-Speedline, which is owned by the Delaware River Port Authority. (SEPTA also runs trains to West Trenton, New Jersey, and Trenton, New Jersey.) In recent years it is slowly being privatized.
In the 1990s, the system expanded, with new "MidTOWN DIRECT" service to New York and new equipment. In 2003, it will open the Secaucus Transfer superstation.
