National University of Ireland

The National University of Ireland (NUI) is a federal university system of constituent universities and recognised colleges set up under the The Irish Universities Act, 1908. The university was reconstituted, in a major reform, under the Universities Act, 1997.

There are four constituent universities of the university, these are:

There are also five recognised colleges of the university, these are: Historically, Queen's University, Belfast, was also associated, this is when the Queen's University of Ireland consisted of the Belfast, Cork, and Galway colleges. The Irish Universities Act, 1908 broke the link with Belfast and introduced the University College, Dublin which previously had its degrees conferred by the Royal University of Ireland, this university was dissolved.
