Motherfucker

Motherfucker (also contracted form: mofo and muthafucka) is a common insult and profanity in the English language, and is widely considered obscene and inappropriate. Literally it is an accusation towards a man of having had (or even being in the habit of having) sexual intercourse with his own mother, and therefore an accusation of a kind of incest, i.e. a violation of the widely applicable incest taboo. The term is popular in hip hop culture.

In recent years, "motherfucker" is increasingly being used to describe inanimate objects, dating back to early hip hop culture. An example from a song by Rockmaster Scott and the Dynamic Three, which has since become a hip hop cliché:

The roof! The roof! The roof is on fire!

We don't need no water, let the motherfucker burn!

Burn! Burn! Motherfucker burn!

In spite of overuse, the term is widely considered highly insulting when used in earnest.
