Born Michael (pronounced the Spanish way: mee-cha-el, like "Israel") Camilo in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 1954. Clasically trained (at the National Conservatory) and became a member of the National Symphony Orquestra.

Moved to the United States in 1979, thence became known as "Michel" (English pronounciation is closer to his name than "Michael" pronounced in English). Based in New York City, where he often performs at the Blue Note.
