Metropolis
The word metropolis (Greek "mother city") originated with the Greek colonies in antiquity (q.v. for discussion), which retained cultic and political=-cultural connections with their "Mother city" for centuries. The word was used in post-classical Latin for the chief city of a province, the seat of the government, and in particular ecclesiastically for the seat or see of a metropolitan bishop to whom suffragan bishops were responsible. This usage equates the province with the diocese or see.In modern use, "Metropolis" can mean:
- a major city, focal point of urban cultural and social activity, which may by mutual agreement be assigned a dewsignated sister city.
- such a city's metropolitan area in the aggregate, as a social unity.
- the fictional city where Superman lives; see Metropolis (Superman)
- the real city of Metropolis, Illinois
- an influential Fritz Lang film; see: Metropolis (1927 movie)
- a novel by Upton Sinclair
- an anime based loosely on the abovementioned Fritz Lang film; see: Metropolis (2001 movie)
