Metra is Chicagoland's commuter rail system, serving over 200 stations on eleven lines across the Regional Transportation Authority's ("RTA's") six-county service area.

Metra receives an approximately 50% operating subsidy from the RTA; all but one of its lines are the descendants of rail services provided by private railroads up until those railroads' failures in the 1970s. The RTA directly operated its commuter rail services as it acquired them up until 1984, which point it delegated that duty to its subsidiary, the Northeastern Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corporation, which in turn instituted the Metra trademark.
