Megakaryocyte

Time you got around to sponsoring a child
The megakaryocyte is a bone marrow cell that functions as a committed precursor for platelets. It is so called because on light microscopy it has many nuclei (karyo) and is exceptionally large (mega). (Compare to other cells)

Megakaryocyte function is determined by a large number of cytokines, including thrombopoietin.

The developmental history of the megakaryocyte is: hemocytoblast -> megakaryocyte -> promegakaryocyte -> megakaryocyte
