Mariy El (Марий Эл, formerly Мари́йская АССР\) is a constituent republic of Russia. The Mari, formerly known as Cheremis, are a Finnic people speaking two closely related languages, Meadow Mari (марий йылме) and Hill Mari (мары йӹлмы). Meadow Mari is official in the republic, together with Russian, and Hill Mari is considered to be a variant.

Mariy El has an of 23372.3 km2 and a population of over 700,000. Its capital is the city of Yoshkar Ola, the largest city of the republic with over 250,000 inhabitants.
