Latin honors
Latin honors are Latin phrases used to indicate the level of academic distinction with which an academic degree was earned. There are typically three types of Latin honors. In order of increasing level of honor, they are:
- cum laude ("with honor")
- magna cum laude ("with great honor")
- summa cum laude ("with highest honor")
The same phrases are also used for doctorate degrees. The university's degree regulations usually gives clear rules on the minimum grades necessary to obtain a certain honors distinction.
While the use with undergraduate degrees is rather limited to Anglo-American academia the use with doctorate degrees is common world-wide. The British Bachelor's degree classification is a different scheme widely used, with some variance, in UK and Ireland.
