Land reclamation

Land reclamation refers to two related but distinct practices. Both involve modifying a land area into a desired state. However, one often involves restoring the land to a more natural state while the other is by definition a major change from the area's natural state.

1. Land reclamation is the creation of new land where there was once water. Notable examples include the city of Washington, DC (which is built on land that was once swamp) and the polders of the Netherlands .

2. Land reclamation is also the process of cleaning up a site that has sustained environmental damage. This can be done to allow for some form of human use (such as a housing development) or to restore the area to its natural state as a wildlife habitat.
