K-car is a term used to refer generically to the 1981 - 1989 Plymouth Reliant and Dodge Aries made by Chrysler. These vehicles were designed around a front wheel drive drivetrain featuring a transverse mounted Mitsubishi engine in a Renault frame. The cars got good fuel economy for the time, but eventually were replaced by new models as manufacturing methods improved.
