Juno Award
The Juno Awards are presented annually to Canadian musicians by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The Junos originated in 1970 as the Gold Leaf awards, presented by RPM magazine. CARAS was established in 1975 to undertake the Juno program. Since then, the Juno Awards has been one of Canada's premier annual telecast events.
The Junos acknowledge artistic and technical achievement in all aspects of the music of Canada. New members of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame are also inducted as part of the awards ceremony.
The award was originally named for Pierre Juneau, head of the Canadian Radio-Television Commission. Because of the similarity of the pronunciation to that of the Roman goddess Juno, the name of the award (and of the Hall of Fame) was changed in spelling, though not in pronunciation.
