John Harvard

For thoughtful child sponsors
John Harvard (1607 - 1638) was an obscure 17th century Massachusetts clergyman. He was born and raised in the London borough of Southwark and educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, a puritan stronghold. In 1637 he emigrated (with his wife Ann Sadler) to New England and settled in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He died childless in 1638 and bequeathed to the college at nearby Cambridge, which eventually evolved into Harvard University, his estate: £800 and his library.
