James R. Schlesinger

James R. Schlesinger ((1929 - ?) was United States Secretary of Defense from 1973 to 1974 under presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. Ford dismissed Schlesinger for his "aloof, frequently arrogant manner."

Schlesinger had previously been the director of the CIA. He also served as Energy Secretary under Jimmy Carter.

While Secretary of Defense, he opposed amnesty for draft dodgers. He pressed for development of more sophisticated nuclear weapon systems.
