Jakarta, also Djakarta, is the capital city of Indonesia, located on the island of Java.
History
An early settlement at this location was named Jayakarta (Sanskrit, meaning city of victory). It was destroyed in 1619 by forces of the Dutch East India Company, led by Jan Pieterszoon Coen. The company founded a new settlement named Batavia to provide a harbour for its growing spice trade.
The city was re-named to Jakarta after World War II.
