The only official royal residence in the United States, Iolani Palace was completed in 1882 for use by King Kalakaua and his wife Queen Kapiolani. After Kalakaua's death, the palace became the residence of his sucessor, Queen Liliuokalani. The palace was used as a royal residence from 1882 until the monarchy was overthrown in 1893. Thereafter, the building served as the capitol of Hawaii during the State's Republic, Territory, and the early State periods. When the new state capitol was completed in 1969, the Palace was vacated and restoration begun. 'Iolani Palace is currently open for tours and events.
