Indre-et-Loire is a dÃÂépartement in west central France, originally known as the province of Touraine. It is named after the Indre and the Loire rivers.
The dÃÂépartement is marked by fertile valleys and has four significant rivers: the Loire, the Cher, the Vienne, and the Creuse.
Tours, the prÃÂéfecture (capital), was a center of learning in the early Middle Ages.
Indre-et-Loire is the home to numerous outstanding medieval chateaux that are open to the public.
