IS-136 is a digital extention to the Advanced mobile phone system (AMPS). It was designed to use existing AMPS channels. IS-136 superceded IS-54, a previous extention to AMPS, adding features such as text messeging and data capabilites. It divided each AMPS channel into seperate subchannels using TDMA technology.

IS-136 is used primarily by Cingular Wireless and AT&T Wireless, although both companies are now migrating to GSM technology.
