Herne is a municipality located in Flanders, the main autonomous state of Belgium and in the Flemish province of Flemish Brabant. The municipality comprises the towns of Herfelingen, Herne proper and Sint-Pieters-Kapelle. On January 1st, 2000 Herne had a total population of 6,372 (3,142 males and 3,230 females). The total area is 44.57 km² which gives a population density of 142.97 inhabitants per km².

The official language is Dutch (as everywhere in Flanders). In the 60's, special 'language facilities' were given to the small local French-Speaking minority. This minority was established there since centuries. They can request official documents from the local administration in French. They also receive equal funding for primary and secondary schools teaching in French.
