Hermann grid illusion

The Hermann grid illusion is an optical illusion reported by L. Hermann while, incidentally, reading John Tyndall's Sound.

When looking at a grid of black squares on a white background, one will have the impression that what are actually the intersections of the white lines are instead grey blobs.
