Harbin Institute of Technology

For people who check facts
The Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) is a technical universities in China, akin to a Virginia Tech or Carnegie Mellon from an American perspective. HIT's main building, "Ju -Lou" is a smaller version of the main building of the University of Moscow and the bulk of the buildings were built during the time of Sino-Soviet friendship from 1949 to 1959 when the Soviets were very active in further developing the North East of China.

Harbin Institute of Technology was founded in 1920. During the past over 80 years, it has developed into a research-oriented key international university with engineering as its core, encompassing science and management and conducting the supporting programs of humanities and social science. Since 1954 when it was confirmed as one of the first leading institutions of higher education by the state, HIT has enjoyed the priority of the Central Government’s support. It was listed as one of the 15 universities with the highest national financial support in 1984. In 1999 it was confirmed as one of the nine universities with the goal of being constructed on a par with world-class universities.

HIT now consists of 60 specialties, 85 master’s degree programs, 57 doctoral degree programs, 15 post doctoral working stations, and 4 national bases of basic education, among which are 14 with first-class disciplines for master’s and doctoral degrees, 18 state key disciplines, and 22 state and provincial key labs.

Among the 3020 faculties, there are 17 academicians from Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chinese Academy of Science, 378 supervisors of Ph.D candidates, 629 professors, and 1112 associate professors.

HIT has long been geared to the needs of the development of national economy and defense, and assuming a large number of national large scale challenging projects. With its strength of scientific research ranking the top position in China, its research outlays have surpassed 100 million Yuan during the past 9 years, reaching 516 million Yuan in 2001. With its faculties’ intelligence and diligence, it has been creating miracles one after another: the first analogue computer, the first intelligent chess computer, the first arc welding robot, the first world-class new-system radar, the first IC CMOS chip with its own copyright, the first superway computer real-time 3-D image creation system, the first high-performance computer controlled fiber twister…… It only took HIT three years, a considerate short period of time, to complete “the Large-Size Vacuum Container Ground Simulation Equipment”, a national key scientific research project. HIT ranked the second position in the 10-year comprehensive evaluation of the State of research projects of “the National 863 High-Tech Programs”. The small satellite independently made by HIT will also give its birth soon.

Bearing its school spirit, “Strict Criteria, Superior Performance”, in mind, its faculties have been making their every endeavor to train all kinds of talents acknowledged at home and abroad and have delivered 100 thousand graduates to home and abroad during the past 80 years, among them are national leaders and the Communist Party leaders, national generals, backbones in the scientific research field, and distinguished entrepreneurs. They have devoted their intelligence and all efforts to China’s prosperity and human beings’ development and civilization.

With the national educational principle as the guidance, HIT takes an distinction-and-flexibility-oriented training approach, and puts great emphasis on cultivating students’ practical skills and awareness of creativity. Engineering ability, deriving from a sound foundation of basic knowledge and rigorous scholarship, is one of the most conspicuous advantages of HIT students. Therefore, we have, on the one hand, enhanced the basic education, regarding conducting programs of natural science, management science and social science not merely as a way of transmitting scientific knowledge, as a way of developing students’ world view of dialectical materialism and scientific way of thinking, but as a way of setting a solid foundation for the development of their creativity, comprehensive qualities, and engineering ability; on the other hand, in order to develop students’ practical skills, we had taken a two-lay training approach, focusing both on basic skills and on scientific research methods, so as to create a favorable environment to developing engineering ability, in which students will thus foster the independence in learning and problem-solving.

In the aspect of discipline arrangement, with universality as the core principle, HIT provides courses both for military and civil use, and fully demonstrates its advantage of integrating various disciplines. HIT has formed a sound disciplinary system combining key disciplines with new disciplines and supporting programs. The education provided by HIT is geared to the needs of scientific development, exhibiting the high quality of China’s key universities.

The guidance of the national government, and human-based ideology, and rigorous administration of disciplines have led to the significant development of HIT. It has achieved great achievements both in undergraduate and postgraduate educations: The Teaching Administration Office has been granted the title of “Excellent Teaching Administration Office of National University” in the past 2 years, and The Graduate School ranks 7 among graduate schools of all universities in China. HIT has been granted “National Labor Award” because of it remarkable educating performance. All the faculty and students of HIT, filled with confidence, are making every endeavor to forge ahead towards the great goal of high-quality internationally well-known university.
