Hallelujah

Hallelujah is a term used in the Bible to praise God. The Hebrew expression Hallelu-Yah literally translates as "Praise Jah, you people!" or simply "Praise Jah!" Jah is the shortened form of the name Yahweh or Jehovah.

The term is used about 24 times in the Old Testament (mainly in the book of Psalms, where it starts and concludes a number of Psalms) and four times in greek transliteration in Revelation.

• one from Leonard Cohen, also sung by John Cale, Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright
• The Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah is also a famous use of the word.
